The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ)

White Elephant

Port Klang which is located about 40 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur, is a major port in Malaysia. The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) will be the first free trade zone in Malaysia which integrates free commercial and industrial activities. An integrated 400 hectares international cargo distribution and consolidation centre adjacent to Westports is similar concept to the Jebal Ali free zone in Dubai. The PKFZ project was initially approved on the self-financing condition. However, the project cost ballooned from an estimated 1.1 billion ringgit to a whopping 4.7 billion ringgit. The inflated budget is nonetheless expected to be shouldered by the Government! Another example of dodgy deal-making, good idea with “great” planning and “superb” implementation! Malaysia Boleh!
