Happy Chap Goh Meh
Today, 21 Feb 2008 is the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year / Chinese New Year 2008. It’s time to celebrate Chap Goh Meh or YunXiaoJie (元宵节). This day marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebration. At the same time, it is also Chinese Valentine’s Day for Chinese communities. In traditional Chinese culture, young unmarried women will gather to toss tangerines into the sea. Of course it’s not to feed the dragon but in a hope that their future spouse will pick it up. I’m not sure whether people still do it nowadays. Why don’t we eat those tangerines rather than “throw” them into the sea. Wasted instead! For me, Chap Goh Meh is such an important day for my family members to sit down together and have a nice dinner. Then later I will spend my wonderful Chinese Valentine’s Night with Donkey. Do what? Aiyoyo, can’t tell you! You know I know! Shhh…
